- Authors
Allen, William Loyd
- Abstract
The article discusses the work of the New Baptist Covenant (NBC), a North American Baptist church alliance in the 21st century, in comparison with other Baptist church alliances that have existed throughout the 400 years of Baptist church history. The author begins by explaining Baptist church autonomy in the 17th century and the rise of Baptist ecclesiastical connectionalism in the 18th-century U.S. Nineteenth-century Baptist societies such as the English Baptist Missionary Society and the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) are then explained. The development of centralized denominational corporate hierarchies in the 20th century is detailed. Postmodernism's impact on church relations in the 21st century is emphasized.
