- Abstract
The article "What does survival mean? The ambivalence of a ubiquitous concept" in the Berliner Debatte Initial deals with the various meanings of the term "survival". The Last Generation, a German-Austrian alliance of climate activists, emphasizes the necessity of their actions to prevent collapse. The new head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Jim Skea, on the other hand, emphasizes that the world will not perish even if it gets warmer. The article examines different notions of survival and emphasizes the importance of sharpening the understanding of survival in order to develop a policy that is oriented towards the survival of those whose survival is already in question. The prepper movement, survival shows on television, and the perspectives of marginalized groups on survival are also discussed. The text emphasizes the importance of community and identity for survival and calls for a politics of survival that aims to transform discriminatory conditions.
