- Title
The risks of misclassifying addictive food substances as non‐addictive.
- Authors
Gearhardt, Ashley N.; DiFeliceantonio, Alexandra G.
- Abstract
The authors presents their response to commentaries by C.A. Monteiro and G. Cannon about their work showing evidence that ultra-processed foods (UPF) is associated with addictive eating. They acknowledge that UPFs are the source of addictive food substances as they contain refined carbohydrates and added fat and may contain artificial sweeteners. They oppose a commentary by R. West suggesting that the concept of para-addiction should be applied to highly processed foods.
