- Abstract
The article reports on the rise of HIV infection in China. According to a joint report by the Chinese Ministry of Health and United Nations agencies, 650,000 people are living in China with HIV. 70,000 new cases are reported each year. An estimated 80% of cases are due to intravenous drug use and prostitution. Rates of infection are increasing among high-risk groups including drug users, sex workers and their clients, men who have sex with men, and partners of people living with HIV. Prevalence among pregnant women exceed 1% in certain areas.
