- Abstract
"At Risk: Black Youth and the Creative Imperative in the Post-Civil Rights Era" by Jennifer Griffiths is a study of literary depictions of Black adolescents who use art as a means of liberation. The book examines various texts, including plays, novels, and multi-genre books, that portray young Black artist characters responding to social forces that stereotype and limit them. Griffiths analyzes the complex processes by which these characters assert their personal integrity and defy societal expectations. The book situates each text within its historical and cultural context and draws on a range of secondary sources to provide a comprehensive understanding of the works.
