- Authors
Pipes, Daniel
- Abstract
The article analyzes how leaders of Arab-speaking political leaders have managed military losses between 1956 and 2014, and how some of utilized such defeats to their own political benefit. The author examines incidents including the Suez crisis in Egypt in 1956 and Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser's political fortunes, Egyptian president Anwar Sadat's reaction to the Yom Kippur War, and Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's little-noticed decision to return gains made during the Iraq-Iran war.
