- Abstract
This editorial discusses the challenges of improving crop productivity in the face of environmental restraints caused by climate change. Plant breeders are working to identify key genetic traits that can help crops adapt to abiotic stresses and climatic extremes. However, the complexity of gene networks controlling stress tolerance and the lack of reliable phenotyping methods make this task difficult. The emergence of "omics" technologies has provided new methods to study plant responses to stress conditions. Several studies presented in this special issue explore the physiological and molecular traits associated with stress tolerance in different crops. The ultimate goal is to improve phenotyping methods and develop stress-tolerant crops to ensure food security for a growing world population.
