Post-traumatic stress disorder and traffic accidents: Differential diagnosis and comorbid conditions.

- Abstract
There are many possible scenarios that would require clinicians to distinguish post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from other mental disorders that share similar signs and symptoms. Further, psychiatric comorbidity is the rule - rather than the exception - with post-traumatic stress disorder. This review provides information on the identification and differential diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder with a focus on pediatric patients and psychological sequelae from traffic-related accidents and injuries. Age-specific features of PTSD and a PTSD subtype for preschool children are described. Factors that confound the detection and interpretation of PTSD symptoms are considered with reference to children and their parents. Some common patterns of PTSD comorbidity are discussed, and a summary of some relevant literature is presented, from which recommendations for clinicians and future research are offered in conclusion.
