Mapping Medieval Space in the Embajada a Tamorlán.
- Authors
DALY, Karen M.
- Abstract
The article discusses aspects of the travel narrative "Embajada a Tamorlán," authored by Ruy González de Clavijo. It notes that the narrative, also known as "Embassy to Tamerlane," recounts the journey of an embassy sent by Castilian king Enrique III to the court of the Mongol ruler Timur, also known as Tamerlane. It analyzes the textual mapping of Timur's empire based on the presentation of Clavijo. The author also examines how the Embajada breaks from previous undimensional medieval models of spatial representation in travel literature through a precise spatial and temporal ordering of the landscape and a recounting of the Mongol Emperor Timur's biography.
