- Title
The Virgin, the Queen, and the Cathedral: St. Etheldreda of Ely and her Influence on the Ely Lady Chapel.
- Authors
Stanton, Anne Rudloff
- Abstract
The article explores the influence of Saint Etheldreda of Ely on the Ely Lady Chapel in England. It examines the possibility that the location of the north transept and the relief cycle of the interior walls were influenced by the cult of the virgin queen Etheldreda. It discusses the development of such cult and examines several miracles that may offer evidence of conscious imitation of tales involving the Virgin. It also cites the writing of Bede on Etheldreda's reputation as a healing and royal saint.
