Meibomian gland dysfunction may be at the root of dry eye.

- Abstract
The article reports on the role of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) in dry eye. This hypothesis is being pushed by Donald R. Korb, chief technology officer of TearScience, who proposes including expression of MGD as part of every routine exam to determine if the gland is functioning. According to Caroline Blackie, a clinical research scientist, performing diagnostic meibomian gland expression on all patients could prevent a dry eye condition from developing in many patients. Blackie also cites cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion 0.05 percent as another therapy option that can improve the quality of meibomian gland secretion. INSET: A new paradigm for dry eye.
