- Abstract
Note the absence of immunoreactivity of the neoplastic cells; the few individual scattered cells exhibiting strong cytoplasmic immunoreactivity are likely macrophages (resident or recruited), ×10 objective gl The final diagnosis was cutaneous Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH). Fine-needle aspiration of the spleen revealed rare large round cells similar to those in the dermal nodules. Given the typically poor clinical outcomes, it is important to distinguish this neoplasm from reactive histiocytosis, which have a better prognosis with appropriate immunosuppressive treatment.2 Langerhans cells can exhibit more atypical cytomorphology in cases of cutaneous LCH than that seen in histiocytomas.
