A literary criticism is presented of the book "The Dollmaker" by the Appalachian author Harriette Arnow. An overview of the novel's themes of religion, spirituality and values, including the main character Gertie Nervels' search for God, is provided. "The Dollmaker's" social criticism of the U.S.'s alleged materialistic culture is discussed.
