- Abstract
In Pakistani Sufi Islam placards pasted to the walls in urban public spaces constitute the main visual mass communication medium to announce and advertise the upcoming festival celebrating the death anniversary of a saint. These placards which mark a quotidian visual feature of shrine-centred Islam are described and analysed in detail with respect to their textual content, graphic design, composition and imagery. Such prints are an expression of popular devotional religiosity in the Pakistani Punjab and an important medium of information for the pious followers of a saint. In addition, they provide insights into the ritual and social practices of devotees, particularly into the institutionalization of saints'cults.
