- Title
The Perception of Lexical Tone in Mambila.
- Authors
Connell, Bruce
- Abstract
The article focuses on tone perception in Mambila, a Benue-Congo language with four level lexical tones. It informs that the Mambila language is spoken in a remote area of the Nigeria-Cameroon borderland. The language comprises many dialects which show interesting variation with respect to tone. It is stated that since tones are basically level in Mambila, the possibility exists that tone recognition may occur relatively early in the tone. It is stated that in Mambila, tone can be distinguished on the basis of pitch height alone. It is stated that a perceptual cue, voice quality, has been found to correlate with tonal differences.
