- Authors
Hollermann, Ephrem
- Abstract
The article discusses Catholic evangelization in the U.S., with focus given to the work of the Benedictine monastic order. The author begins by discussing Catholic evangelization between 1776 and 1908, which focused on nurturing the American Catholic community while converting African Americans and Native Americans. He goes on to specifically explain Benedictine evangelization between 1846-1908, noting efforts to set up schools for recently freed slaves and the establishment of missions. The impact of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II) on both evangelization and Benedictine monastic life in general is also investigated.
