- Abstract
Fifteen years of civil war in Lebanon followed by fifteen years of Syrian hegemony have dramatically affected the country's relationship with its past and entrenched the risk of conflict between its ossified belligerent communities. Thus, the Syrian military withdrawal has opened several Pandora's boxes which are all related to the country's contemporary history. Three areas in particular are discussed in this contribution: the domestic political game and its relations with regional and international powers; security-related trends ranging from the ongoing instability at the southern border to the impact of Hezbollah's weapons on the domestic political equation as well as the threat posed by jihadist networks, and finally the Palestinian issue which is likely to persist as the eternal political resource used by rival groups at the expense of any real progress on the issue of the refugeesthemselves. With the current crisis surrounding the publication of the indictment issued by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), it is the entirestability achieved with the Doha Agreement (May 2008) that is put at risk, illustrating the sclerosis of a system that has shown since 2005 the need to recast the foundations of the national agreement.
