- Abstract
The article discusses the concept of rational criminal addiction in relation to the habits of individuals who reportedly indulge in repeated criminal misconduct, focusing on the utility of committing a crime and the apparent characteristics of a consumption good. Optimal deterrence is addressed in relation to rational "episodic" offenders and a standard approach involving law and economics. Sanctions, over-incapacitation, and punishments for career criminals are examined.
