- Abstract
This article discusses the lasting consequences of cigarette smoking on the heart. While the risk reduction for cardiovascular diseases with smoking cessation is well-documented, long-term adverse consequences still persist. The study conducted by Dr. Wüst and colleagues investigated the effects of smoking cessation on the heart's metabolic, lipidomic, and structural remodeling. The findings suggest that certain adverse effects, such as inflammation and cardiac fibrosis, may persist even after short-term cessation. Additionally, the study found that smoking exposure causes weight loss and increases fatty acids in the heart, and upon cessation, mice experienced weight gain and a further increase in their lipid profile. However, smoking cessation also induced vascularization and improved mitochondrial respiration and bioenergetics. Overall, the study highlights the multifaceted and dynamic effects of smoking cessation on the heart and emphasizes the importance of monitoring physiological changes and identifying optimal support strategies for those trying to quit smoking.
