- Abstract
The article presents a study to determine the geologic age of early caledonides formation in Olkhon Island, Russia. It says that the region possesses unique geological characteristics where different levels of the Earth's crust are exposed and separated by three main lithoplates created by collisional-shear zone deformations. The lithoplates are the Chernorud zone, composed of granulite facies metamorphism, the Anga-Sakhyurty zone, composed of amphibolite facies metamorphism, and the Anga zone, composed of epidote-amphibolite metamorphism. It says the study used Uranium-Lead (U-Pb) isotope dating of zircons performed on the SHRIMP-II ion microprobe and confirmed through the Triton X-100 mass spectrometer. The results show that Birkhin gabbroic massif age is at 500 million years (Ma).
