- Title
Effect of colorectal cancer surgery on female sexual function: a prospective cohort study.
- Authors

- Abstract
Less is known about the negative effects of surgery for colorectal cancer on female sexual function than male sexual function, which has, in comparison, been documented more. Many of the studies are retrospective using non-validated questionnaires, with small numbers, thus making it difficult to draw conclusions. Preoperative discussions about the potential problems are often neglected. The authors used a prospective validated questionnaire to assess the effects of surgery for colorectal cancer on female sexual function and a validated quality of life questionnaire to assess physical and mental wellbeing. The completion rate was low (<20%)--a trend also observed in other studies. A minority of the respondents reported being in an active relationship, and overall, there was a reluctance to complete the sexual function questionnaire. The results are mixed, but 1 year after surgery, the group of respondents did not experience a significant deterioration in sexual function.
