- Abstract
The article discusses the portrayal of British grandiosity and guilt in the Sherlock Holmes stories of Arthur Conan Doyle during the peak of imperialism. It explores Sherlock Holmes stories including "A Study in Scarlet," "The Sign of the Four," and "Scandal in Bohemia." It says that the stories show British narcissistic weakness which is balanced by Sherlock Holmes' grandiosity. It adds that the fear of self-destruction is the expression portrayed by the stories toward British imperialism.
