- Abstract
The article focuses on economic issues related to child care and early childhood education in the United States. One glaring and critical example is failure to recognize the connections between safe, affordable, quality child care and the barriers that prevent tens of thousands of Americans from working to maximize the productivity of the society and the economy. The child of today is the worker of tomorrow. The opportunities available to a child help determine not only his or her eventual self-sufficiency or lack thereof, but also the degree to which that child becomes a productive adult who contributes to building the nation's economy. The care and education of preschool children is an issue that has arrived fairly recently on the national policy agenda. Twenty years ago relatively few mothers of young children worked outside the home and quality child care was a luxury for a wealthy minority. It is essential for the economic health and stability of millions of the American families.
