- Title
Rogue antimatter found in thunderclouds.
- Authors
Castelvecchi, Davide
- Abstract
The article focuses on the discovery of antiparticles detected in a thunderstorm. It comments on a report published in "Journal of Plasma Physics" in which three spikes of highly energetic photons (y-rays), which are produced by positron annihilation, were detected on August 21, 2009 in a line of thunderstorms off the coast of Georgia. It mentions the team could not explain the presence of y-rays through traditional sources including cosmic rays or electrons discharging from charged clouds.
