- Abstract
Chylothorax is defined as an effusion or accumulation of lymph in the pleural cavity, as a result of an injury to the thoracic duct. It is a relatively rare entity in newborns and often occurs as a complication of heart surgery, thoracic surgery, or as a result of a disturbance of the lymphatic system. It causes significant respiratory morbidity and can lead to malnutrition and immunodeficiency, so it needs timely diagnosis and treatment. Diagnosis is based on biochemical analysis of pleural fluid containing chylomicrons and elevated levels of triglycerides and lymphocytes. Nursing care is essential in the recovery of these newborns.
