- Abstract
The article discusses the North Carolina Wing of the U.S. Civil Air Patrol (CAP) during World War II, from 1941 to 1944, part of the North Carolina Office of Civilian Defense (NCCD). It comments on defenses against German U-boats, particularly off North Carolina's Cape Hatteras, and the establishment of coastal patrols of the Outer Banks. The author comments on bases at Roanoke Island, Beaufort, and Manteo. Other topics include state and federal funding, blackout and dim-out measures to counter coastal illumination, and veteran status for CAP volunteers.
