- Abstract
Even with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and teaching remotely, some teachers have attempted to create student-centered learning environments in their remote classes. Appropriating ideas from Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy and utilizing interviews with undergraduate students in a Philippine university, we document factors students considered crucial in promoting student-centered learning during the pandemic. First, students highlighted the importance of autonomy as teachers provided them with different opportunities for learning and as students took responsibility for their time and work. Second, they noted the role of applicability as they preferred lessons relevant to their present context and useful for their future practice. Third, students emphasized the need for instructors' availability, particularly in a remote setting where it was easy to feel unsupported and alone. These concepts align with Freire's conception of empowering learners, creating authentic learning experiences, and forming a community of teachers as students and students as teachers.
