- Abstract
Aim: In this study, we aimed to determine social anxiety levels among obese people and factors that have influence on social anxiety. Material and Method: The study group consisted of 100 consecutive obese patients over 18 years who applied to diet polyclinic. Sociodemographic Information Form, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale were used as measuring instruments. Results: In the study, it was determined that the rate of very severe social anxiety on obese patients who participate in the research is found to be 47%. The rate of depression and anxiety according to Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were 28% and 22% respectively. There was a statistically meaningful relationship between BMI, anxiety, depression, education level and social anxiety. Conclusion: It is stated that social anxiety often occurs on obese people. Moreover, it is shown that depression, anxiety and increase in BMI level have an additive effect on social anxiety. It is found that the intensity of social anxiety among obese people who graduate from primary school and high school is higher than university graduates.
