An essay is presented which discusses the relationship between the fictitious character Superman (Clark Kent), U.S. popular culture, American identity, American exceptionalism and globalization from the 1970s through the mid 2010s. An overview of Superman in American films, including "Man of Steel," directed by Zack Snyder, is provided.
