- Abstract
The article discusses the Bumba-meu-boi folguedo, or festival, in Northeast Brazil, focusing on São Luis in the state of Maranhão. It examines the festival as a combination of traditional Brazilian folklore and modern popular culture and entertainment culture, a hybrid known as cultura popular. The author comments on aspects of governmental administration and explores the transformation between tradition and modernization. Other topics include the annual rhythm of the festival, the narrative cycle in Bumba-meu-boi performances, and leadership roles within the festival.
