- Abstract
BACKGROUND A first reported case of Achromobacter xylosoxidans, a gram-negative, aerobic, motile bacillus bacterium, causing discospondylitis in a dog. It was first described in 1971 in human aural discharge. It is an emerging human nosocomial opportunistic pathogen, able to colonise most organ systems in immunocompromised patients and those with malignancies and cystic fibrosis. CASE REPORT An 8-year-old neutered male Labrador with lumbosacral discospondylitis underwent decompressive laminectomy. Recurrent symptoms required revision surgery for debridement of proliferating intervertebral fibrotic tissue. Resolution of infection was achieved with long-term antimicrobial therapy. CONCLUSION Achromobacter-associated disease is rarely reported in the veterinary literature, but this and a subsequent case highlight its role in opportunistic infections.
