- Abstract
This interview study of 518 urban, single-parent, public assistance mothers used measures from the National Survey of Family Growth Cycle III to examine the relationship between contracepting problems, unplanned fertility, and both child abuse and neglect. Findings reveal that increasing numbers of unplanned conceptions increase the probability of both abuse and neglect and that the unplanned conceptions are due to both failure to use birth control and ineffective use of birth control. Discussion focuses on implications for child protective service caseworkers and family planning counselors.
