- Abstract
Import sugar, delivered under the direct supervision of ministeries, local governments and municipalities in the Ottoman Empire during World War I, was among the commodities, the market price of which skyrocketed beyond the general inflation rate in the same period. Import and distibution operations were entrusted to a network of government bodies, so-called "national" corporations and Muslim retailers, supposed to be the basic components and instruments of a government policy, entitled "national economy" both by the ideologues of the Party of Union and Progress and contemporary historiography. Based on claims of profiteering surfaced on the press in the last year of the war, this monograph tries to discover the role of the said network in the exorbitant increase in sugar prices.
