- Abstract
During the period of reforms (Tanzimat), the Ottoman state made efforts not only to impose its policies on public by using direct or indirect means, but also to penetrate deeply into all layers of society and gain a more visible character in daily life. The main motivation behind these efforts was the necessity to establish a new mode of relationship with the society in accordance with the Tanzimat principles, such as equality regardless of religion, rule of law and legal order. For this purpose, the Ottoman state implemented unprecendented strategies such as creating national festivals, a national anthem, official ceremonial occasions etc. Among these, perhaps the most interesting one is the monuments which were designed to be erected in urban public areas. These monuments may be evaluated as visual representations of Ottoman modernization, and implementation of imperial authority in urban spaces. This study examines some of these monuments, including the one erected to commemorate the promulgation of Gülhane Edict in 1839, the commemorative columns built during the reign of Abdulhamid II, and the Monument of Liberty erected by the Young Turk regime. The aim of the article is not to evaluate the artistic value of these monuments but rather to examine their iconography which represents a number of elements of the political ideology propagated by the Ottoman state.
