- Abstract
This article presents the letters that Jacques Savary de Lancosme, French ambassador in the Ottoman Empire, sent from İstanbul to Rome at the end of the sixteenth century. During the succession crisis in France, Lancosme supported the Catholic League against the candidacy of Henry IV and tried to prevent Ottoman recognition of Henry IV as the king of France. These letters are found in the Archivo General de Simancas and belong to the years between 1590 and 1593 when Lancosme had uncertain diplomatic function and lost direct communication with France. This article aims to introduce these letters that are not used in the study of this period and discuss their journey from Istanbul to Rome and Madrid. The contact that Lancosme established with Rome will be evaluated in the framework of the role of Spanish Monarchy in Europe at the end of the sixteenth century.
