- Abstract
The present monograph by Friedrich Meins examines the conception of historical truth in Dionysius of Halicarnassus. The book aims to overcome the antithesis between history and rhetoric by closely examining the predecessors of Dionysius in both areas. Meins offers two possible options for further research: the first involves exploring the use of rhetorical devices by Dionysius to convince readers of the central thesis of the Greek identity of the Romans. The second option is to examine how the rhetorical animation of historical material served purposes other than persuasion and to pursue an approach based on less questionable assumptions in order to gain a better understanding of Dionysius' conception of the usefulness of his historical work. The book consists of four main chapters that deal with methodological statements, rhetorical theories, idealization, and paradigmatic aspects of the Antiquitates Romanae. Meins' approach focuses on specific passages and places them in the context of critical traditions since the 19th century. Overall, the book is a useful addition to the specialized literature, although it is too strongly defined by the parameters of this literature to appeal to a broader readership.
