- Authors
Spohr, Hans-Ludwig; Steinhausen, Hans-Christoph
- Abstract
The article discusses the fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and their persisting sequelae in adult life. It describes the different variants of FASD as a consequence of maternal alcohol abuse during pregnancy. According to the article, longitudinal studies reveal the disastrous consequences of intrauterine alcohol exposure into adulthood. It states that FASD are a lifelong diagnosis, which means that primary care physicians, obstetricians and pediatricians must work hard towards early detection and follow-up for affected individuals. It further notes that an interdisciplinary approach, which involves psychosocial and medical services, is essential.
