- Abstract
From 1815 to 1861 peace reigned in Ohio, during which the enrolled militia atrophied. The resultant lack of state military force was compensated for partly by volunteer militia, partly by private military associations. In 1844 Ohio rescinded the enrolled militia's training requirements, and prescribed that the active militia consist of volunteer companies. Most of these private volunteer associations were born, existed for a time, and disappeared without trace. Despite this, by the end of 1860, on the eve of the Civil War, a minimum of 28 infantry, 10 artillery, and 1 cav- alry company existed; with which Ohio faced the -- four month hence -- challenges of the Civil War.
