- Abstract
The former Municipality of Guanabacoa (TMG) was the third most important municipality within the city of Havana during the republican period, due to a rapid urban expansion experienced between 1940 and 1960. Through the review of documentary sources of diverse character and with the use of mixed methods of analysis, supported by field work and historical-logical analysis, the article seeks to expose and specify the background and factors that conditioned its urban development between 1948 and 1959 and its relationship with growth of the city of Havana, with the purpose of obtaining a broader and more comprehensive vision of this evolution. It is concluded that the materialization of the broad Public Works Plan promoted by the government of Ramón Grau San Martín, was the driving force that opened the way for the municipality to modernity, fostered industrial expansion and the emergence of new residential developments, protected by a broad legislative framework that favored growth and led to the conurbation with the metropolitan urban march.
