- Abstract
This article is a biographical analysis of the poet José de Espronceda during his years of emigration. This period was decisive with respect to both his literary proposals and in his political activity. During his emigration, he began to appreciate how the new regime, though triumphant, proved not to be liberating but mercantile and exclusive. He became committed to a different liberalism, one with heroic features and leadership (Torrijos and Chapalangarra). It was one that embraced a popular struggle and a democratic spirit, which had been threatened by a new liberal elite as had occurred in France in 1830. These experiences played an important role his portraits of heroism and revolution in his poetry and in his political manifestos.
