- Authors
Thompson, Jennifer A.
- Abstract
In "Funny, You Don't Look Funny: Judaism and Humor from the Silent Generation to Millennials," Jennifer Caplan explores the role of humor in American Jewish culture from the mid-twentieth century to the present. Caplan argues that each generation of American Jews has used humor to navigate the tensions of being Jewish and American. The book analyzes various forms of Jewish humor, including short stories, novels, television programs, films, and an Instagram feed, and examines how they reflect changing ideas and feelings about Jewish identity. Caplan's analysis provides valuable insights into the ways Judaism and Jews are expressed and understood in contemporary American culture. The book is accessible and suitable for undergraduate courses on American Jewry or popular culture.
