THE PROBLEM OF THE DEATH PENALTY IN PARDO BAZÁN: REVISITING LA PIEDRA ANGULAR.
- Authors
Cunningham, Debbie S.
- Abstract
This article revisits Emilia Pardo Bazán's novel La piedra angular, taking issue with previous critics' claims that it is a thesis novel in favor of the abolition of the death penalty. Based on textual citations and essays written by Pardo Bazán, I conclude that the novel is not a thesis novel, nor is it abolitionist in nature. La piedra angular can better be characterized as a criticism of Spanish society's particular implementation of the death penalty. Some critics have examined the criminological theories evident in the novel and have concluded that Pardo Bazán contrasts the Positivist and Classical Schools of Criminology through various characters. This article argues that rather than contrasting the Positivist and Classical Schools of Criminology, Pardo Bazán contrasts the ideologies within the Positivist School. Further, this article demonstrates Pardo Bazán's awareness of criminological theories and their shortcomings as she presents her critique of Spanish society.
