- Title
"Primitive" Discourse: Aspects of Contemporary North American Indian Representations of the Irish and of Contemporary Irish Representations of North American Indians.
- Authors
Porter, Joy
- Abstract
The article discusses Irish literary portrayals of North American Indians and, conversely, North American Indian portrayals of the Irish. The author states that such portrayals often rest upon stereotypes and outdated colonial imagery as opposed to historical reality. She believes that the Irish and Native Americans had similar experiences with colonialism and should therefore be able to eradicate their colonial way of thinking about each other. It is argued that such representations help inform and strengthen imperialist discourse within the U.S.
