- Title
Sovereignty and spectacle in 1557: the reunion of Philip II and Mary I.
- Authors
Tibble, Matthew
- Abstract
In 1557 Mary Tudor and her husband Philip of Spain reunited in England for the final time. Most accounts describe the visit as a failure, with a disastrous war against France looming ahead, famine and bankruptcy threatening the country, and the restoration of Catholicism faltering as the queen started to fall ill. This article questions such negative accounts, arguing that the royal couple fashioned state ceremonies, court festivities and religious rituals to consolidate their marriage and successfully recast the image of their monarchy on a European stage.
