- Abstract
The article analyzes the vicissitudes of the statue of La Victoria located in Talca, as part of the appropriation of cultural goods made during the occupation of Lima. This work of art was the result of an international competition convened by the Peruvian government in 1866 to capture the nationalist impetus that arose after the triumph over the Spanish navy on May 2 of the same year. On the occasion the figure of Colonel Gálvez emerged, who became a hero and became the central motif of the monumental complex that became an urban landmark of the city. Finally, two similar statues were produced. One of them was located in 1874 at the top of the monument of Lima, while its simile, of greater dimensions, was stored in the port of El Callao until the Chilean occupation of Lima, when it was found by the victorious army and transferred to Talca, as spoils of the triumphant local regiment. There, it settled in the urban space towards 1900, becoming a patriotic icon. The processes faced by both sculptures allow us to explore the memory and eruption of new nationalist constructions developed by elites facing a process of renewal.
