- Abstract
Turkish Hamza-nâmes firstly have been documented in written format by Hamzavî (d. 815/1412-13), who is the brother of the famous poet Ahmedî. It is understood that long before being converted to written format Turkish Hamza-nâmes were beloved as part of storytelling tradition among Turkish people. The reason why Hamza-nâme becomes so popular lies in the characteristics of Hz. Hamza such as his courage, honesty, and support for the weak and poor. This drove the passion of Turkish readers to learn more about him. Hamza-nâme is a large-scale work of 72 volumes. The copy used in this study which is located in the General Library of Istanbul University Literature Faculty is quite different than other existing copies both qualitatively and quantitatively. Hamza-nâme known for its epic and fantastic elements have been read by large and different communities over a widespread geography. In particular, among traditional Ottoman soldiers, called Yanicaris, it has been read through books or improvised by storytellers. It can also be seen that a record has been added in almost all of the volumes once a reading of the work was completed. In these records, after the reading, a separate writing set is used to note the name of the reader, the location of the reading room, and the description of the readers and -- sometimes-- the audience.
