- Abstract
Proton beam radiotherapy is an emerging treatment modality, paticularly in pediatric tumors. This is related to physical characteristics of proton beams which help to confine high dose to a defined target volume without "exit dose" observed with conventional photon therapy, thus offering significant improvement in dose distrubution while minimizing radiation exposure to surrounding structures. The biggest potential gain in improvement of therapeutic radio would be possible in treatment of pediatric tumors since the long term effects of radiation in children can potentially be reduced, impoving teratment related morbidity. This substantial gain in therapeutic ratio is very promising which could result in replacement of photons with proton therapy in pediatric radiation oncology in the future.
