- Abstract
Approaches of reproduction, social and cultural theory have pointed out the significance of family backgrounds for educational success and failure. The relevance of family constellations and relationships for an educational advancement or descent of students within the multipartite school system, however, still lack sufficient explanation. From the perspective of family-centred socialisation research and reconstructive adolescent research, this article focusses the relevance of interaction between familial-generational relationship dynamics, adolescent individuation and educational careers and investigates how educational advancement is acquired subjectively. These aspects serve to examine the acquisition of educational advancement. Based on a reconstructive longitudinal study that investigated students coping with educational advancement into the senior classes of the German gymnasium, we suggest different types of integrated and disintegrated acquisition of educational advancement into the educational-biographical conception of identity. We will exemplify which familial and adolescent dynamics increase the probability of an educational advancement, and how educational advancement can promote or hinder adolescent transformation.
