BUILDING A PIPELINE TO COLLEGE.
- Authors

- Abstract
The article presents a study of the “A Better Chance” (ABC) program seeking to improve the accessibility and quality of higher education in the U.S. that was funded by the Rockefeller Foundation between 1963 and 1969. The program is considered in the context of how philanthropy shaped the public focus on educational opportunity in the 1960s. It is noted that the ABC program was initiated by an elite circle of ivy-league educators and benefited from an association with the Independent Schools Talent Search Program, which sought to diversify preparatory school student bodies. The ABC program's distinct approach in terms of student selection, preparation, and personal intervention is discussed.
