- Abstract
The article discusses the effects of the 2008-2009 global financial crisis on the Canadian economy. Particular focus is given to the ways in which the Canadian experience of the crisis differed from that of the U.S. According to economist Don Drummond, the prudent risk management practices at Canada's large national banks played a significant role in mitigating damage to the country's economy. Details on the role of financial regulation in the crisis are presented. Other topics include the relationship between retail and wholesale banking, the Canadian real estate market, and the securitization of mortgages.
